From Pixel Surgeon // Holy Fucking Shit The Onion has a number of interesting articles relating to the WTC. Well worth a read if you’re in for an evil laugh.

I installed XP on a 4+ year old PentiumPro 200mhz with 128 megs of ram and a Matrox Millennium PCI graphics card. Just to test the minimum system requirements, you see. It works! With all of the chrome on, the gui is just as slow as OS X 10.1 on the new iBook! I guess that’s an “acceptable” speed, right?
I need new video drivers for the Gateway. It should speed up a lot then.

The weather this am is just perfect! Just like fall.

I “acquired” a copy of Windows XP Pro for my Gateway Solo and OS X 10.1 for my iBook. The design of the iBook is beautiful and the Aqua interface is great but it’s still too damned slow. There needs to be a way to turn off the chrome so it’ll run faster. If not having drop shadows on my windows means they will resize in realtime, so be it. WinXP’s Luna looks ok, but they should have redesigned all of their icons. If you dig down, there a still a lot of the older icons which look really unprofessional against the newer Icon Factory ones. Resizing windows is a bit slower than with Win2k but the overall system speed (and boot) is greately improved. But, with Windows, you can turn off all of the chrome and get an ugly, but fast gui. Idealy, a combination of the Aqua + Luna gui would be great, and if products like DesktopX and WindowBlinds are any indication, we might have it soon.
I did a standard Photoshop filter test (new image 10″x10″x300dpi, fill with noise, radial blur on max). Even after I increased the memory allocated to Pshop in OS 9.2.1, the little P3 600 Gateway beat it by ~10 seconds. I thought G3 500’s were supposed to be like 900mhz P3’s?

Is Afghanistan the next Vietnam? An excellent piece on the Register. But, if the media coverage continues like it is (non stop 24 hours on every TV and radio channel/station) we will get bored with it before anything happens.

I’m becoming increasingly worried at the potential loss of freedom in the US. All of these measures to help combat terrorism will eventually be used on the people of the US. We were losing our privacy gradually before and now it seems it’ll be taken away with a backhoe. I’m also worried that Georgie will try to reinstate the draft. A Very Bad Thing.

Charlotte seems quiet. As I walked downtown yesterday, the only thing I heard was cars. No one seemed to be speaking, laughing or arguing. There faces seemed to convey a look of shock, horror and anger. The only thing that seems to be on people minds are: help the victims then leave a crispy hole where Afghanistan was. Or maybe it’s just me.

The Taleban’s web site shows the FBI’s wanted poster for Usama Bin Laden. Doesn’t look like they are supporting him.

Coming soon: Undo_Culture. Artistic thoughts on all of this.

I work at Duke Power in Charlotte, NC. We havn’t been evacuated or anything, but I feel we should in some way … we could be a target? How many others feel this way in other cities. Both Bank of America and First Union evacuated their towers in downtown. (I’m at work now btw).

Tips to remember when designing a corporate technology site: if in doubt, add a tab navigation system. If that didn’t work, add a tree menu (like Microsoft). If that doesn’t work, just copy Microsoft. Blah.

Someone figured out a way to record and track your mouse movements over a page. They can “read” your movements. Ooooh. Guess we can start screwing up their data collection in new ways. “C’mon we know you wanted to shock the monkey! Your cursor was over it for 5 seconds.”

Mac OS9 has the ability to burn cd’s built into the os. I couldn’t get Toast to work yesterday and I discovered this ability. Weren’t people getting pissed at Microsoft for including this same thing into XP?

I didn’t know that Icon Factory designed the icons in Windows XP. No wonder it looks better!

I think I understand why the Mac Jihad hangs on Steve-o’s every word … it’s the only way they get updates to save them from bad software. On this iBook, OsX isn’t that bad. I like it much better than Os 9.1. But resizing windows and selecting multiple icons is S.L.O.W. 10.1 will be annouced by Stevie tomorrow (maybe) so it will be for download soon. Or $20 on a CD. I can’t find a firm answer. Sigh. But it plays mp3’s well.
